A bride-to-be finds your salon through a friend's tagged photo. She taps your name, lands on your profile and reads the bio: "Beauty is power. Love yourself. Est. 2019." She wants to know if you do bridal makeup, which area you are in and how to book a trial. The bio tells her none of it. She goes back and taps the next salon in the comments, whose bio says "Bridal and party makeup, Sector 17, Chandigarh. WhatsApp to book a trial." That salon gets the booking.

Your Instagram bio for business is the most-read text on your page, and usually the most neglected. It was typed in a hurry on the day the account was made, and never touched again. This guide shows you what to write, line by line, so that a visitor knows in a few seconds what you do, where you are and how to reach you. It takes about half an hour.

What a business bio has to do in a few seconds

A visitor who lands on your profile is asking three questions, usually in this order:

  1. What is this? Is it a salon, a clinic, a bakery, a CA firm?
  2. Is it for me? Is it near me, in my budget, for my kind of need?
  3. What do I do next? Call, WhatsApp, visit, order, book?

If the bio answers all three, the visitor either acts or follows. If it answers none, they leave, often without scrolling to the lovely posts below. The bio is not a place for your philosophy. It is a signboard and a receptionist in one.

Instagram keeps the bio short, and the space shown before "more" is shorter still, so treat every word as rent you are paying. Check the current limit in the app when you edit, since it can change.

The four-line formula for an Instagram bio for business

Most good business bios follow the same shape. You do not need all four lines, but this order works for almost every local business.

LineWhat it saysSalon example
1. What you doYour main service, in customer wordsBridal, party makeup and hair
2. Who or whereYour area, city, or who you serveSector 17, Chandigarh
3. Proof or differenceOne true thing that sets you apartWomen-only, private bridal room
4. Next stepOne clear actionWhatsApp to book a trial

A few rules make the formula work:

  • Use customer words. "Hair colour and keratin" beats "hair transformation journeys". Write what people actually type in search.
  • Put the place in. Local customers search by area. "Salon in Sector 17" helps someone nearby feel it is for them.
  • Only claim what is true. "Certified", "best in town" or "award-winning" should appear only if you can back it up. If it is not provable, leave it out.
  • One action, not five. "Call, WhatsApp, DM, email or visit" confuses. Pick the one you answer fastest.

Business bio ideas by industry

Here are business bio ideas you can adapt. Change the details to your own and keep the shape.

Salon or spa: "Hair, skin and bridal makeup. Model Town, Ludhiana. Ladies only, by appointment. WhatsApp to book."

Restaurant or café: "North Indian thalis and tandoor. Hazratganj, Lucknow. Open 12 to 11. Order on the link below."

Clinic: "Family physician and child health. Kothrud, Pune. Mon to Sat, 10 to 8. Call to book a visit."

CA firm: "GST, ITR and company compliance for small businesses. Andheri East, Mumbai. Call to book a meeting."

Boutique: "Handpicked kurtas and festive wear. Ghod Dod Road, Surat. New arrivals every week. DM for sizes."

Home baker: "Eggless cakes and cookies to order. Delivering across Indore. Order 2 days ahead on WhatsApp."

Notice what these leave out: quotes, a list of every service, hashtags and the founding year (unless it is a real selling point, such as a sweet shop in its third generation).

Name field, username and category: quiet profile optimisation

The bio is not the only text on your profile. Three other fields matter, and most owners leave them as they were on day one. Fixing them is easy profile optimisation.

The name field. This is the bold name above the bio, and Instagram search looks at it. Many owners waste it by repeating the username. Instead, add your main service: "Glow Studio | Bridal Makeup Chandigarh". Someone searching "bridal makeup Chandigarh" is now more likely to find you. Keep it readable, not stuffed.

The username. Keep it close to your real business name, simple to spell and the same on every platform. Avoid lots of underscores and numbers that customers cannot remember.

The category. In a professional account you can choose a category that shows under your name, such as "Beauty salon" or "Bakery". Pick the closest one. It answers the "what is this?" question before the visitor reads a word.

Contact buttons. Switch on the call, email or WhatsApp buttons you will actually answer, and add your address if you want walk-ins. A tap-to-call button often works better than any line of text.

You usually get one main link, so choose it carefully. The best link in bio is the one that turns a visitor into an enquiry with the fewest taps.

Good choices for a local business:

  • A WhatsApp chat link with a short pre-filled message. Ideal for salons, bakeries, tutors and shops that take orders by chat.
  • Your Google Maps listing, if walk-ins matter most.
  • Your booking or ordering page, if you already use one.
  • Your website, if it has a clear contact page and loads quickly on a phone.

If you need several links, a short link page with three or four options can work. Every extra choice slows the visitor down.

Tap your own link once a month. Broken links, expired offer pages and old numbers are some of the most common problems a social media audit for small business pages turns up.

Whenever a post mentions the link, say exactly what the visitor will find there: "Tap the link in our bio to book a bridal trial" works better than "link in bio".

Highlight covers and story highlights that act like a menu

Right below the bio sit your story highlights. For a visitor, they work like a menu or a brochure: tap one, see everything about that topic. Treat them as part of the bio.

Useful highlights for most businesses:

  • Services or Menu: what you offer, with prices if you are happy to show them.
  • Work or Results: finished looks, dishes or projects (with your customers' permission for anything showing them).
  • Location: a short video from the main road to your door, plus parking tips.
  • Timings: regular hours and festival timings.
  • FAQ: the questions you answer on the phone every day.
  • Offers: current offers only. Remove old ones.

Highlight covers are the small circle images on each highlight. Keep them simple and matching: one brand colour as the background, one simple icon or a single word, all in the same style. A row of five matching covers makes the profile look organised and cared for. A row of random screenshots makes it look forgotten.

Why the posts below the bio matter just as much

A sharp bio brings a visitor to the next step: scrolling your posts. If the last post is from two months ago, even the best bio cannot convince them you are open and active. The bio makes a promise; the grid has to keep it.

That is why the bio and a steady posting rhythm work as a pair. If you want ideas for what to post through the year, our salon and spa social media posts guide has a full plan, and how to post every day on Instagram shows how to make it a habit rather than a weekly fight.

How Content365 keeps the grid under your bio full

Content365 makes the posts that sit under your bio: 365 of them for one brand, one for every day of the year. Each post is a 1080 x 1350 image with a square-safe centre, so it looks right in the profile grid as well as in the feed, ready for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp.

An image model paints a scene with no text in it; the studio's compositor then places your real logo, business name, phone, website and call to action on top, from the exact text you gave. That means the same phone number and call to action you put in your bio can appear on every post, spelt correctly, and the logo is never redrawn by the model. Captions are written for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X, plus one in your own language (Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and 9 more), for every day. Indian festivals are planned into the calendar on the days they fall.

You review each day in your own gallery first, and you or your team post them. We do not post on your pages. Ratings, testimonials and awards appear on posts only when your brand confirmed them, which keeps your bio and your posts equally honest.

One brand is ₹3,999 including GST for the whole year, not per month, and each extra brand is the same ₹3,999 including GST. To try it first, sign in with Google and start free: the free plan gives you 2 posts every 48 hours, no payment needed.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an Instagram bio for business be?

Short enough to read in a few seconds. Instagram sets a limit and shows only part of the bio before "more", so aim for three or four short lines and check the current limit in the app while you edit.

Should I use emoji in my business bio?

You can, sparingly, as bullet points to separate lines. But words carry the meaning. A bio made mostly of symbols tells a new visitor less.

Is it worth adding keywords to the name field?

Yes, in moderation. Adding your main service and city to the name field, such as "Bridal Makeup Chandigarh", can help people who search for that service find you. Keep it readable rather than stuffed.

Usually a WhatsApp chat link or your Google Maps listing, whichever leads to more enquiries. Pick the one that gets a customer talking to you with the fewest taps.

How often should I update my bio?

Check it monthly and whenever something changes: new number, new timings, new branch, a seasonal offer. A two-minute update keeps it accurate.
